four al-qaeda, lj terrorists held in karachi

karachi: The crime investigation department (cid), sindh, arrested four al-qaeda and lashkar-i-jhangvi terrorists during a raid in model colony here on sunday. Those arrested included the brother of lj chief qari zafar.
The police have recovered a huge quantity of explosives, arms, detonators and ball bearings from their possession. Ssp investigation, cid, sindh, mohammed aslam khan, said that after receiving a tip-off about the presence of terrorists in model colony and their plan to hold a late night meeting, a cid team conducted the raid. He said the alleged terrorists opened fire on the cid team when it reached the place. However, after a brief encounter, they arrested mohammed anwar alias mohammed asim, rehan alias mehmood, azeem alias yousuf and ghulam hyder alias baba while their accomplices jehangir, saifullah, azam and misbahuddin fled under the cover of fire.
The police recovered two kalashnikovs, two tt pistols, 50 kilogrammes of c-4 explosives, 22 kilogrammes of sulphur powder, detonating cord, four iron cylinders, 35 gallons of nitric acid, 1,000 capacitors, 25 timers, integrated circuits, regulators and other items. Khan said that qari anwar, qari zafar’s brother and a resident of model colony, was a member of al-qaeda and the mastermind of the marriott hotel blast in karachi.
Qari anwar was arrested in 2003, along with habibullah barmi and maulvi abdul mutlib barmi while 538 kilogrammes of explosive material, five hand grenades, two kalashnikovs and hundreds of rounds were recovered from them. However, he was later released on bail by a court. He was in hiding since then.
Qari anwar told the investigators that he, along with jehangir and saifullah alias keamariwala, had killed two intelligence bureau officials, who had arrested him and his accomplices, in the preedy area in 2008.
According to the investigators, mohammed rehan, a resident of the ranchore lane area, was working for al-qaeda in pakistan. He was trained in an arab country, the investigators said, adding he was responsible for providing shelter to arab militants in karachi.
Azeem alias yousuf told the investigators that he was born in afghanistan. After the afghan war, he came to pakistan and settled in karachi. He has reportedly admitted of working for qari zafar and baitullah mehsud.
Ghulam hyder alias baba, a resident of lyari, was also working for the lashkar-i-jhangvi. The investigators said that the alleged terrorists were planning to target important installations, including government buildings and religious places.
