neither can God be found in the mosque
نہ خدا وچ کعبے

nor is God in the Ka'ba
نہ خدا قرآن کتاباں
na khuda qur'aan kitaabaan
neither is God in the Quran or other books
نہ خدا نمازے
na khuda namaaze
nor is God in the prayer ritual

سانوں عشق لگا ہے پیارے دا
saanoon ishq laga hai pyaar da
we are crazed with passion for Love
سانوں پیارے دا دلدارے دا
saanoon pyaar da, dildaar da
for Love! for the Heart-Possessor!

نہ ربّ عرش معلّے اتے
na rabb arsh mu'alla utte
neither is God above the highest heaven
نہ ربّ خانے کعبے ہُو
na rabb khaane kaabe - hu
nor is God in the Ka'ba – He!
نہ ربّ علم کتابی لبھا
na rabb ilm kitaabi labbha
neither was God found in bookish knowledge
نہ ربّ وچ محرابے ہُو
na rabb wich mahraabe – hu
nor is God in the mosque's niche – He!
گنگا تیرتھ مول نہ ملیا
ganga teerath mool na milya
(even) on pilgrimage to the Ganges, the source was not found
پینڈے بے حسابے ہُو
painde be-hisaabe - hu
(despite) going measureless distances – He!
جد دا مرشد ملیا باہو
jad da murshad milya baahu
when the Guide was found by Bahu
چھٹے سب عذابے ہُو
chutte sab azaabe - hu
over were all the torments – He!

سانوں عشق لگا ہے پیارے دا
saanoon ishq laga hai pyaar da
we are crazed with passion for Love

بلھے شاہ - بلھے شاہ کون ہے
bulle shaah - bulle shaah kaun hai
Bulleh Shah – Who is Bulleh Shah?
بلھے شاہ اوہ کون ہے - اتّم تیرا یار
bulle shaah auh kaun hai - uttam tera yaar
O Bulleh Shah, who is that? your greatest friend?
اوسے ہتھ قرآن ہے، اوسے گل زنّار
ause hath qur'aan hai, ause gal zunnaar
in his hand is the Quran and on his neck - the Brahmanical thread

سانوں عشق لگا ہے
saanoon ishq laga hai
we are crazed with passion
پیارے دا پیارے دا
pyaar da pyaar da
for Love! for Love!
مولا دا مولا دا
maula da maula da
for the Master! for the Master!
مرشد تے مولا دا باہو دا
murshid te maula da baahu da
for the Guide and the Master! for Bahu!

مسجد ڈھا دے مندر ڈھا دے
masjid dha de mandar dha de
demolish the mosque, demolish the temple
ڈھا دے جو کجھ ڈھیندا
dha de jo kuch dhainda
demolish whatever you can demolish
پر کسی دا دل نہ ڈھاویں
par kisi da dil na dha
but don't demolish anyone's heart
رب دلاں وچ ریہندا
rabb dilaan wich raihnda
for God lives inside the hearts

سانوں عشق لگا ہے پیارے دا
saanoon ishq laga hai pyaar da
we are crazed with passion for Love

دل کی بساط کیا تھی نگاہِ جمال میں
dil ki bisaat kya thi nigaah-e jamaal men
what was the capacity of the heart faced with the sight of beauty
اک آئینہ تھا ٹوٹ گیا دیکھ بھال میں
ik aaeena tha toot gaya dekh bhaal men
it was a mirror, (so) was broken in the effort of watching over it
----
راتیں جاگیں شیخ سڈاویں
raateen jaagen shaikh sadaauwen
you stay up all night to be called a shaikh
راتیں جاگن کتّے – تیں تھیں اتّے تے
te raateen jaagan kutte – tain theen utte
well, the dogs also stay up all night - they're above you!
در مالک دا مول نہ چھڈدے
dar maalik da mool na chadde
never do they leave the master's door
بھانویں سو سو پاؤندے جتے - تیں تھیں اتّے
bhaanwen sau sau paunde jutte - tain theen utte
even if hundreds of shoes are hurled at them - they're above you!
رکھی سکھی روٹی کھاندے
rukkhi sukkhi roti khaande
they eat plain dry bread
ادھے جا گڑے تے ستّے - تیں تھیں اتّے
ate ja rare te sutte - tain theen utte!
and go sleep on the bare ground - they're above you!
چل وے میاں بلھیا چل یار منا لے
chal we miyaan bulhiya chal yaar mana le
come, O good fellow, Bulleh! come and cajole the beloved
نئیں تے بازی لے گئے کتّے - تیں تھیں اتّے
naeen te baazi lai gaye kutte - tain theen utte
else, the dogs will win the game - they're above you!
----
