Bridge inaugurated by accident victim’s family

A pedestrian bridge was inaugurated at the Silver Jubilee Gate, University of Karachi (KU) on Tuesday by the parents of Anum Zehra, a KU student who lost her life in a road accident almost a year ago.
Zehra, 25, was a student of BA Hons Third Year Evening Programme in the Economics Department. She was crushed to death by a dumper at the Silver Jubilee Gate on January 24, 2009. The dumper was coming from Samama Shopping Centre towards Mosmiat, but the driver lost control of the vehicle and crushed the young girl.
After the inaugural ceremony of the new Pedestrian Bridge on Tuesday, it was named after Zehra. The KU Vice Chancellor Dr Pirzada Qasim had especially invited Zehra’s parents to inaugurate the bridge. Zehra’s father expressed his satisfaction about the bridge and said that his daughter’s sacrifice would now keep other students safe.
Addressing the occasion, Gulshan Town Nazim, Muhammad Wasay Jalil informed the students and teachers that the town will help the university in increasing the fleet of buses to provide a safe and comfortable journey to the students.
“The city government is eager to develop Karachi city and put it in the league of one of the best cities of the world. Efforts are being made in this regard, an example of which is the construction of the pedestrian bridge that conforms to the aesthetic taste and increases the beauty of the city,” he said.
Students Adviser, Prof. Dr Tanveer Khalid; Campus Security Adviser, Dr Khalid Iraqi; and Chairman, Department of Economics, Prof. Dr Shafiq-ur-Rehman; were also present on the occasion.
