"Shahryar is an epitome of excellence in Urdu poetry and his creations will serve as a guide to the amateur poets and will enthrall generations to come", said AMU Vice Chancellor, Lt. Gen. (Retd.) Zameer Uddin Shah while delivering the inaugural address at the Symposium on "Shahryar"s life and work" organized by Sahitya Academy, Delhi at the Arts Faculty lounge today.

Gen. Shah said that Shahryar was an alumnus of this University and served as a teacher for more than two decades. He not only rose high to achieve distinction of being a Jnanpith and Sahitya Academy Award winner but also brought laurels by penning record breaking popular songs for Indian cinema. He acknowledged the fact that Shahryar dedicated all his life to promote Urdu language.
Gen. Shah said that his mother tongue is Urdu and he often writes his letters in this beautiful language although he could not give much time to refine his dialect due to his job compulsions. He said that after joining AMU as its Vice Chancellor, he is stressing more on developing this language in the University.

Convener of Urdu Advisory Board of Sahitya Academy, Dr. Chandrabhan Khayal, said that his association with Shahryar spanned over four decades and his work will keep resounding his greatness through the ages. He said that besides a poet of eminence, Shahryar was also a great human being. He pardoned a famous poet of Sindhi language who received Sahitya Academy award for his work in Sindhi, which was later found to be a mere translation of Shahryar's poetry.

Delivering the presidential address, Prof. Shafey Kidwai, Chairman, Department of Mass Communication, AMU, said that Shahryar had expertise in expressing his feelings with great precision. He said that Shahryar succeeded in portraying common human sentiments and it is why his poetry strikes a chord with the masses. He said that AMU Vice Chancellor, Gen. Shah shares the same attribute and if he chose to enter the literary arena, he would also be known for his precision. He said that Gen. Shah had however written an article on the human face of Indian army and rendered poetry in English.

Former Dean of Arts Faculty of AMU, Prof. Abul Kalam Qasmi shed light on the life of Shahryar. He said that Shahryar provided as a linking bond between the two groups of critics in Urdu led by Prof. Gopichand Narang and Prof. Shamsur Rahman Farooqui. He said that as a teacher, Shahryar used to teach fiction and this is also an evidence of his greatness.

Prof. Khursheed Ahmad, former chairman of Department of Urdu elaborated on the various attributes of Shahryar's poetry. He said that Shahryar and Akhtarul Iman took Urdu Nazm to a new height. According to him, Shahryar was a friendly person and always held friendship on top.

Mr. Mushtaq Sadaf, Programme Officer of the Symposium conducted the programme. He discussed the poetics of Shahryar in the light of his collections of poetry "Ism-e-Azam", "Satwan Dar", "Hijr ke Mausam", "Khwab Ka Dar Band Hai", "Neend Ki Kirchein" and "Hasil-e-Sair-e-Jahan".
A large number of teachers and students attended the symposium.​
