AssalamOAlaikum. Category hierarchy MOD is a modification for the phpbb forum software that adds several useful features to it. It also makes it possible to create sub-forums to virtually unlimited levels. Category hierarchy MOD also enahnces the security of the forum software.
Installing the categoy hierarchy mod is a time consuming and error prone job. That is why I have created a pre-isntalled package of the category hierarchy mod (vedrsion 2.1.6) with the urdu phpbb forum software. This will make the installation of this MOD much easier. I have also adapted/translated a few other useful MODs e.g. the attachment MOD, that can be used in conjunction with the category hierarchy MOD. A member of the Mehfil forum Makki has just informed that a free forum hosting service (http://www.forumsdot.com/) has included Urdu language files as well as a template customized for Urdu in its offer. That means that setting up an Urdu forum has now become much easier. Now you can set up you own Urdu forum without going through all the hassle of uploading files on a free host and having to struggle with its limited disk space and uptime. I hope that we will be able to see some new and interesting Urdu forums as a result of this development.

ہمارے اردو پیایچپیبیبی کی ورژن 0.5b3 میں ایک بگ تھا جو صرف مائیایسقیوایل 4.1 یا بعد استعمال کرنے والوں کو مسئلہ دے رہا تھا۔ میں نے وہ بگ ختم کر دیا ہے اور نئی ورژن 0.5b4 ریلیز کی ہے۔ اس ریلیز میں اس کے علاوہ کچھ اردو ترجمے والی فائلوں سے BOM کو بھی نکال دیا ہے کہ وہ ہیڈر کے ایرر دے رہا تھا۔

اردو پیایچپیبیبی پیکج کو پیایچپیبیبی ورژن 2.0.20 پر اپگریڈ کر دیا گیا ہے۔ نیا ورژن (0.5b3) آپ ڈاؤنلوڈ کر سکتے ہیں۔
چونکہ اس میں کئی سیکورٹی فکس ہیں اس لئے ہمارا مشورہ ہے کہ آپ جلد اپنے فورم کو اپگریڈ کر لیں۔
پیایچپیبیبی کے اپنے [en](en)bug fixes کے علاوہ ہم نے یہ بگ ختم کئے ہیں:
1۔ جب صارف کے کمپیوٹر کی زبان اردو ہو اور ویب پیڈکی بھی تو کچھ لکھا نہیں جاتا تھا۔ اب یہ درست کر دیا گیا ہے۔
2۔ کچھ ٹیکسٹ باکس کی زبان بدلنے کے لئے ریڈیو بٹن کام نہیں کرتے تھے۔ اس کو بھی ٹھیک کر دیا گیا ہے۔

جیسا کہ پچھلی پوسٹ میں ذکر تھا ہم نے پیایچپیبیبی کو اردو میں مقامیانے پر اتنا کام کر لیا ہے کہ اسے اب آپ لوگوں کو مہیا کیا جا سکے۔ خیال رہے کہ ابھی یہ بیٹا ورژن ہے۔ جب آپ لوگ اسے ٹیسٹ کر کے اس میں سے بگ نکالیں گے تو پھر ہم اس کی نوک پلک درست کر کے یاک بہتر ورژن سامنے لائیں گے۔
ہم نے اس کا اردو ترجمہ کرنے اور ٹیمپلیٹ میں دائیں سے بائیں لکھنے کے لئے تبدیلیوں کے علاوہ اس کے کوڈ میں بھی کچھ ردوبدل کیا ہے تاکہ یہ یونیکوڈ کو صحیح طرح سپورٹ کر سکے۔ یونیکوڈ کی یہ سپورٹ فیالحال ہم نے صرف مائیایسقیوایل 4.1 کے لئے ڈالی ہے۔ بعد میں دوسرے ڈیٹابیس کے لئے بھی شامل کر دیں گے۔
اس کے علاوہ نبیل نے اس پیکج میں اپنا اردو ویبپیڈ بھی شامل کیا ہے تاکہ اسے استعمال کرنے والوں کو اردو لکھنے میں آسانی ہو۔
ان وجوہات کی بنیاد پر ہم صرف اردو زبان کی فائلیں ریلیز نہیں کر رہے بلکہ ایک مکمل پیایچپیبیبی پیکج ریلیز کر رہے ہیں تاکہ آپ کو اسے نصب کرنے میں آسانی ہو۔
اس پیکج کو ٹیسٹ کرنے کے لئے ہمیں کئی قسم کے بیٹا ٹیسٹرز کی ضرورت ہے۔

As Nabeel mentioned before, we have been working on releasing a public version of Urdu phpBB.
PhpBB, for those you do not know, is described on its website thus:
phpBB is a high powered, fully scalable, and highly customizable Open Source bulletin board package. phpBB has a user-friendly interface, simple and straightforward administration panel, and helpful FAQ. Based on the powerful PHP server language and your choice of MySQL, MS-SQL, PostgreSQL or Access/ODBC database servers, phpBB is the ideal free community solution for all web sites.
phpBB also has internationalization and localization support. Hence, it has been translated into a large number of languages.
Adding Urdu support to phpBB is a lot more than simply adding an Urdu language pack to it. Some changes to the phpBB core are needed to make it work properly as a Unicode Urdu forum. Further, several changes are required in the templates for properly displaying Urdu text. The integration of Urdu WebPad makes it possible to edit Urdu text without the need of installing Urdu language support or keyboard even on windows 98 systems. Therefore we have decided to release Urdu phpbb as a pre-modded package. Later, we also plan to package the Urdu language and image files separately for those running multilingual phbBB boards. For those wanting to turn their exiting phpBB forums into Urdu forum, we will release a MOD that will detail the steps needed to perform this conversion.
The version (0.5b2) of Urdu phpBB (based on phpBB version 2.0.19) we are releasing is beta quality software. Therefore, we need beta testers to help us debug it.
Most important of all, we need people who plan to install Urdu phpBB and start a forum. It will be good if they cover a variety of operating systems, database software and PHP versions.
We have also set up a test installation where you can register and help us find bugs. We also need some of those users to take the responsibility for testing moderator and admin functions.

We are approaching an important milestone in our efforts of promoting Urdu on the internet which is the release of an Urdu version of the phpBB forum software. The original phpBB package needs several modifications to make it properly work as a Unicode Urdu forum. We have decided to release it as a pre-modded phpbb package. Installing this package would setup a fully functional Urdu forum. We want to thoroughly test it before actually releasing it. ہم اردو کی ترویج کے ایک اور اہم سنگ میل کی جانب پیش قدمی کر رہے ہیں اور وہ ہے اردو پی ایچ پی بی بی (Urdu phpBB) کا اجرا۔ اس جانب ہمارا سفر کافی طویل اور صبر آزما رہا ہے۔ اوریجنل پی ایچ پی بی بی میں ایک یونیکوڈ اردو فورم کے طور پر استعمال کے لیے کئی تبدیلیوں کی ضرورت ہوتی ہے۔ میں نے اور زکریا نے فیصلہ کیا ہے کہ ہم اردو phpbb کا پورا پیکج ایک pre-modded فورم کے طور پر پیش کریں۔ اس پیکج کو انسٹال کرکے ایک مکمل طور قابل استعمال اردو فورم سیٹاپ ہوجائے گی۔

Actually I wanted to talk about several topics in this post but as it grew quite large, I decided to split it into two posts. I will post the second part later. So stay tuned.
The Urdu community needs a Unicode Urdu forum. There are already a few Urdu forums that support Urdu in text form. One such forum is at Urdu Life. This forum is based on the InVision Power Board forum software, which is a commercial product. It is still a well-organized forum. I remember people mentioning phpBB, which is open source, and thus free. A fellow blogger Qadeer has already taken up the challenge of translating it into Urdu. I just thought of providing support for Urdu while the translation is still being done. I really had a hard time browsing the source code of phpBB until I discovered PHPXref (PHP Cross Referencing Documentation Generator). It generated an HTML based cross reference of the whole phpBB source code. This made my life considerably easier. I then modified the relevant style sheets and templates (*.tpl files). I was successful in displaying the forum names in Urdu. Then I got stuck at a point where the posted message appeared as hexadecimal codes instead of Urdu text. Asif helped me with his knowledge of php. I used his hints to look at the problematic parts of the code. These are the statements to strip the posted message off HTML tags. I effectively had to castrate that part of the phpBB code. Although Urdu gets posted appropriately now, I am not sure if this is an appropriate solution.
Problems are not over yet. As shown in the images, the post subject gets truncated. I have also tried posting with an Urdu user name and there the user name also gets truncated. I assume that some restriction on some field inside the database is causing this problem. I intend to test drive the Urdu forum by installing the modified phpBB on some free host after this problem is fixed. Again your expert opinion is more than welcome. You are also welcome to download the modified phpBB modules here and have a look if you feel like it. I cannot wait to have a Unicode Urdu forum.
The forum index page properly shows the Urdu forum names and descriptions
The post contents are properly displayed but the post title is truncated. The style sheet is correct. The truncated value is return from the database.
The message index page also shows truncated titles. The same happens with user names entered in Urdu (not shown in the figure).
It must be noted that I worked with the sources of phpBB 2.0 whereas the latest release is phpBB 2.0.11. I will try to prepare a complete protocol of the modifications that I made in different modules. Following are the modules I modified:
